Lewis County Public Health is changing how it shares local measles case numbers. Citing the rising number of measles cases in the area, the agency announced it will no longer issue a press release each time an additional case is confirmed. Instead, it will maintain an online measles case chart, updated as new information becomes available.
Where to find the numbers
The chart lives on the Lewis County Public Health website, which the county now calls the primary source for the latest local case numbers — for residents, community partners, and the media alike. The county says the chart will be updated as soon as new case information comes in, keeping timely updates in one consistent location as the situation develops.
The change was announced in a county release posted October 7.
The backdrop
Lewis County’s first measles case of the year was reported September 26, and ten additional cases were announced October 2 — all in unvaccinated individuals, all in the town of Lowville, and all isolated until no longer contagious. The county’s online case chart now shows 13 confirmed cases (2 new), all unvaccinated, last updated October 7 at 3:00 PM. Governor Hochul’s measles disaster emergency order remains in effect through November 4.
What hasn’t changed
The county’s guidance is the same: the overall risk to the public remains low, particularly for those fully vaccinated. The MMR vaccine remains the best protection. Anyone with symptoms — high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, followed by a blotchy rash — should call their doctor or emergency department before going in, to avoid spreading the virus.
